As often as we ask ourselves the question, “Where should we go to eat?”, we also find ourselves asking “What should we do this weekend?” I saw Café Atlantique’s Facebook post about their wine tasting event at the end of March and I immediately knew what we were doing – we were going wine tasting! And then, of course, the next question was who would want to come with us? I knew exactly which friends would come along because they brought us to our first wine tasting at Café Atlantique last summer. Sure enough, as soon as I asked they were in!
Wine tasting at a coffe shop, you say? Yes, wine tasting at a coffee shop. Café Atlantique, aside from offering coffee and a food menu, also has regular events and live music. The cozy coffee shop is the perfect setting for a casual wine tasting. For two hours we sat and sipped wine, munched on hot and cold appetizers, and had a fabulous time with our friends.
Tina and her staff at Café Atlantique are always friendly and the same holds true during wine tasting. Tina comes around to each table and says hello and chats throughout the event, which I think gives the wine tasting a very personal touch. Also, Tina and her staff are also very accommodating; one of our friends has some special dietary restrictions as a vegetarian with a gluten allergy and they provided appetizers for her after she called ahead to inquire.
In the warmer months Café Atlantique holds wine tasting events outside on their patio, but it was a little too cold in March. Fingers crossed it will be warm enough to be outside for the next wine tasting on April 20th.
For each wine tasting Café Atlantique features four wines based around a theme or a particular region and a description of each featured wine is also shared (see info below). March’s wines were from “The Land Down Under.” One of the staff members briefly discusses the background and flavors in each wine before they go to each table to fill your glass.
When the wine tasting is over most people stay at the Café, order more food and drinks, and continue the evening. We ordered some crepes (you must try the bacon and chocolate crepe!) and split one of the bottles of wine featured during the wine tasting (featured in my Vine video here.)
March Wine Tasting’s Featured Wines:
Starborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand has flavors of pasion fruit, kiwi, and guava with a citrus background. We liked this one so much we shared a bottle after the wine tasting ended.
Rosemount Chardonnay/Semillon from Austrailia has a citrus fruit aroma from the Semillon with fig and melon flavors from the Chardonnay.
Brancott Pinot Noir from New Zealand has ripe chery and plum aromas with spice and savory highlights.
Angove Shiraz from Australia has “aromas of rich plum red currant and liquorice together with spicy vanillin oak.”
Café Atlantique’s next wine tasting is coming up soon on April 20th and will be featuring wines from the United States: “USA All the Way”. Tickets are $25 per person, call to reserve your spot today!
